Fluvial geomorphology

Fluvial geomorphology studies how flowing water erodes, transports, and deposits sediment, shaping river channels, floodplains, and other landforms.

Stream power: A measure of the rate at which flowing water expends energy on a channel bed and banks. It links discharge and slope to a river's capacity to erode and transport sediment.
Drainage basin: An area of land where precipitation and runoff drain toward a common outlet. Its size and shape determine the water and sediment supplied to a river system.
Floodplain: Low-lying land beside a river that is periodically inundated and shaped by floods. Floodplain form records overbank deposition and channel migration.
Braided river: A river with multiple shallow channels separated by shifting sediment bars. It commonly develops where sediment supply is high relative to transport capacity.
Lane's balance: A conceptual relation linking sediment load, grain size, discharge, and channel slope in river adjustment. It frames how changes in water or sediment supply can destabilize channel form.
Shear stress: The force per unit area exerted parallel to a surface, including the force flowing water applies to a channel bed. Bed shear stress helps determine when river flow can entrain sediment.
Discharge: The volume of water passing a point in a river per unit time. Discharge is a primary control on flow competence and channel dimensions.
River restoration: The practice of repairing or improving the ecological and physical condition of rivers. Geomorphic understanding helps restoration work with natural channel processes.
Anastomosing river: A river system with multiple stable channels separated by vegetated floodplain islands. It contrasts with braided rivers through persistent channels and cohesive, vegetated islands.
River regime: The characteristic pattern of a river's flow and channel behavior over time. Long-term variability complicates predictions based on a single flow or sediment measurement.
