Fly fishing

Fly fishing is a method of angling that casts an artificial fly using a specialized line whose weight carries the nearly weightless lure. It imitates aquatic or terrestrial prey to catch fish.

Fly casting: A casting technique that uses the weight of a fly line to propel a lightweight fly. The line’s loops carry the artificial fly to its target.
Entomology: The scientific study of insects. Insect life cycles help explain which prey many flies imitate.
Trout fishing: Angling for trout, freshwater fish found in cold, often oxygen-rich waters. Trout are a classic target for matching flies to natural prey.
Bait fishing: Angling that uses natural or prepared bait to attract and catch fish. Unlike fly fishing, it commonly relies on bait weight or a sinker for casting.
Fly line: A specialized fishing line with enough mass to load a fly rod during casting. Its weight, rather than the fly’s, supplies casting momentum.
Mayfly: An aquatic insect whose short-lived adult stage emerges from freshwater. Mayflies are common prey and inspire many traditional fly patterns.
Saltwater fly fishing: Fly fishing in marine or estuarine waters for species such as bonefish, tarpon, and striped bass. It adapts fly tackle and casting to larger fish and open water.
Spinning fishing: Angling with a fixed-spool reel and lures or bait cast from a spinning rod. Its lure carries casting weight, rather than a specialized weighted line.
Fly rod: A flexible fishing rod designed to cast fly line and control a hooked fish. Its flex stores and releases energy as the line is cast.
Caddisfly: An aquatic insect whose larvae and pupae develop in water before adults emerge. Its varied life stages provide distinct models for artificial flies.
