Fly River

The Fly River is a major river in southwestern Papua New Guinea, flowing from the Star Mountains through Western Province into the Gulf of Papua.

Star Mountains: A mountain range in western New Guinea near the border between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The Fly River begins in these mountains.
Ok Tedi mine: A large copper and gold mine in Papua New Guinea’s Star Mountains. Mine waste has entered the Fly River system through its headwaters.
Fly River floodplain: The low-lying land beside the Fly River that is periodically inundated by floods. Seasonal flooding shapes habitats and livelihoods along the river.
Alice River: A tributary of the Fly River in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. It joins the Fly within the western lowlands.
Western Province: A province in southwestern Papua New Guinea bordering Indonesia and the Gulf of Papua. Most of the Fly River’s course lies within this province.
Ok Tedi environmental disaster: The extensive riverine pollution and ecological damage caused by mine waste from the Ok Tedi mine. It transformed the Fly River and its tributaries downstream of the mine.

Kiunga: A town on the Fly River in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. It serves as a major port and transport hub on the river.
