Foederati

Foederati were non-Roman peoples or communities bound to Rome by treaties, often in exchange for military service. The term also came to describe allied groups settled within Roman territory.

Foedus: A treaty or formal agreement, especially one establishing obligations between Rome and another community. A foedus defined the obligations that made a community foederate.
Roman Republic: The period of Roman government before the establishment of the emperors, conventionally dated 509–27 BCE. Roman treaty relationships with allied communities predated the imperial foederati system.
Visigoths: A Gothic people who established a kingdom in the western Roman Empire and later in Hispania. Their settlement in the empire after 376 is a prominent foederate case.
Roman military decline: The weakening of Rome's capacity to recruit, finance, and control its armed forces. Greater reliance on allied forces reflected strains in the imperial military system.
Socii: The allied communities of the Roman Republic, especially those in Italy, that supplied troops under treaty obligations. Socii were republican allies; foederati became a broader label for treaty-bound peoples, especially in the empire.
Roman auxiliary: A soldier serving in a non-legionary unit of the Roman army, often recruited from outside Roman citizenship. Auxiliaries served inside Roman units, unlike foederati organized under their own leaders.
Social War (91–88 BC): A conflict between Rome and its Italian allies that ended with the extension of Roman citizenship to most Italians. The war transformed the status of Rome's Italian allies and their military obligations.
Theodoric the Great: The Ostrogothic king who ruled Italy from 493 to 526 with formal recognition from the eastern Roman emperor. His rule illustrates how a foederate leader could govern former imperial territory.
Barbarian kingdoms: Post-Roman kingdoms established by non-Roman peoples in former western imperial territories. Several successor kingdoms grew from communities once settled or employed under Roman agreements.
Dediticii: People or communities who had surrendered to Rome and were placed under Roman authority. Dediticii stood in a surrender relationship rather than the negotiated alliance implied by foedus.
