A story transmitted within a community, chiefly through oral retelling, whose details may change across versions. Folktales often express shared beliefs, humor, or practical wisdom.

Oral tradition: The transmission of stories, knowledge, and customs through speech and performance rather than writing. Folktales often persist through spoken retellings across generations.
Cinderella: A folktale about a mistreated young woman who gains a new life through extraordinary aid and recognition. Its many versions show how a widely shared plot changes across cultures.
