Force Publique

The colonial military and police force that maintained authority in the Congo Free State and later Belgian Congo. It became the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after independence.

Congo Free State: A personal colony of King Leopold II in Central Africa from 1885 to 1908. The Force Publique enforced Leopold II’s rule and collected resources across this territory.
Leopold II of Belgium: King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909 who established personal rule over the Congo Free State. He created the colonial regime whose authority the Force Publique was built to defend.
Emile Wangermée: A Belgian officer who served as commander of the Force Publique in the Congo Free State. His command illustrates the Belgian officer leadership imposed over African ranks.
Congo Crisis: A political and military conflict in the Republic of the Congo from 1960 to 1965. The Force Publique’s mutiny helped trigger the crisis immediately after independence.

Louis-François Vanderstraeten: A Belgian military officer and historian of the Force Publique and Belgian colonial campaigns. His historical work documents the force’s organization and military operations.
Congo independence: The end of Belgian colonial rule and establishment of the Republic of the Congo on 30 June 1960. Independence abruptly transferred the force into a new state whose army it became.
Chicotte: A heavy whip made from hippopotamus hide, used as a punishment in parts of colonial Africa. Force Publique personnel used the chicotte to punish and intimidate Congolese people.
Berlin Conference: An 1884–1885 meeting of European powers that set rules for colonial claims in Africa. Its recognition of Leopold’s Congo Free State established the setting for the force’s creation.
