Knowra Forced displacement Forced displacement Forced displacement is the involuntary movement of people from their homes because of conflict, persecution, development projects, or disasters. It includes movement within a country and across international borders.
Internally displaced person : A person forced to leave home but who remains within their country's internationally recognized borders. This is the principal category for people displaced without crossing an international border.
Forced migration : Human movement driven primarily by coercion or serious constraints rather than free choice. Forced displacement is a form of forced migration, often defined by loss of home.
Statelessness : The condition of not being recognized as a national by any state under its law. Displacement can leave people without documents or expose existing gaps in nationality rights.
Voluntary migration : Movement in which people exercise meaningful choice about whether and where to relocate. It contrasts with movement compelled by threats, coercion, or the loss of viable alternatives.
Refugee : A person outside their country who meets the legal criteria for refugee protection, including a well-founded fear of persecution. Crossing a border can bring refugee status when the person meets its legal criteria.
Conflict-induced displacement : The flight of people from their homes because of armed conflict or its direct effects. Armed conflict is a major trigger of sudden, large-scale displacement.
Family separation : The separation of family members through migration, conflict, detention, or other disruptive events. Flight and disrupted communications can divide families and complicate reunification.
Economic migration : Movement primarily undertaken to improve employment, income, or other economic prospects. Economic motives may overlap with coercion, but do not alone define forced displacement.
Asylum seeker : A person who has requested international protection and whose claim has not yet been decided. People fleeing danger may seek asylum after reaching another country.
Persecution : Severe harm or discrimination directed at people because of characteristics such as identity, belief, or political opinion. Persecution can force people to flee and is central to refugee protection criteria.
