Knowra Forced migration Forced migration Forced migration is movement compelled by threats, deprivation, or conditions that make remaining in place untenable. It includes displacement within a country and across international borders.
Persecution : Systematic mistreatment of people because of their identity, beliefs, or political activity. Persecution can make remaining in a home community unsafe.
Refugee : A person outside their country who meets the legal criteria for refugee protection. Cross-border flight can produce refugee status when its legal conditions are met.
Protracted refugee situation : A situation in which large refugee populations remain displaced for years without durable solutions. Displacement can persist long after the immediate threat that caused flight.
Partition of India : The 1947 division of British India into India and Pakistan, accompanied by mass migration and violence. Partition shows how political borders and communal violence can displace millions.
Conflict-induced displacement : Forced movement caused by armed conflict or its direct effects. Fighting and insecurity are common immediate drivers of flight.
Asylum seeker : A person seeking international protection whose claim has not yet been decided. Some people forced across borders enter asylum procedures to seek protection.
Durable solutions : Long-term outcomes of displacement: safe return, local integration, or resettlement elsewhere. These options frame efforts to end displacement without assuming return is possible.
Palestinian refugees : Palestinians displaced in connection with the 1948 Arab–Israeli war and later conflicts, and their descendants under UNRWA’s mandate. Their long-lasting displacement raises questions of return, status, and intergenerational refuge.
Environmental migration : Human movement associated with environmental change, hazards, or degradation. Environmental pressures can make homes uninhabitable or livelihoods untenable.
Internally displaced person : A person forced from home who has not crossed an internationally recognized state border. This category distinguishes internal displacement from refugee movement.
