Forced perspective

Forced perspective is a visual technique that arranges objects and viewpoints to make their apparent size, distance, or position differ from reality.

Perspective (visual arts): A system for representing three-dimensional space and depth on a two-dimensional surface. Forced perspective uses perspective cues to make staged distances or sizes look convincing.
Forced perspective in film: The use of staged object placement and camera position to alter apparent scale or distance in a film image. Film sets use the technique to make actors, props, and locations appear differently sized.
Peephole photography: Photography made through a small opening that restricts the visible scene and viewpoint. A narrow viewpoint can hide spatial clues that would reveal forced perspective.
Optical illusion: A visual perception that differs systematically from the physical properties of the stimulus. Forced perspective is a constructed case of perception diverging from physical layout.
Relative size: A depth cue in which the smaller image of two similar objects is perceived as farther away. A carefully chosen size difference makes objects at different distances appear alike.
The Lord of the Rings film trilogy: A film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, directed by Peter Jackson and released from 2001 to 2003. The films used forced perspective to make hobbit characters appear smaller beside other actors.
Tourist forced-perspective photography: Photographs that align people and distant landmarks to create apparent interactions or size differences. Tourist images commonly make a nearby person seem to touch or hold a distant object.
Perspective distortion: A change in apparent shape or size caused by projecting three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional image. Ordinary perspective distortion arises from projection, while forced perspective deliberately stages the scene.
Linear perspective: A method of depicting depth in which parallel lines appear to converge toward vanishing points. Converging lines can make a shallow set appear to extend far into the distance.
Forced perspective in architecture: Architectural design that uses proportions and spatial arrangement to create an intended illusion of depth or scale. Buildings and gardens can use converging forms to seem longer or larger than they are.
