Forcing (mathematics)

Forcing is a method for extending models of set theory by adjoining new sets while controlling which statements hold in the extension.

Forcing notion: A partially ordered set whose elements represent finite or partial information in a forcing construction. Its conditions encode the approximations that the generic extension will combine.
Continuum hypothesis: The assertion that the cardinality of the real numbers is the smallest uncountable cardinal. Forcing helped show that this hypothesis cannot be decided from ZFC, assuming ZFC is consistent.
Paul Cohen: The American mathematician who introduced forcing and proved the independence of the continuum hypothesis from ZFC. His 1963 work supplied the method’s first landmark independence proofs.
Model of set theory: A mathematical structure in which the language and axioms of set theory are interpreted. Forcing begins with such a structure and analyzes a larger one built from it.
Inner model: A transitive class model of set theory contained within another model and sharing its ordinals. Inner models restrict the available sets, whereas forcing extensions add sets.
Generic filter: A filter on a partially ordered set that meets every dense set belonging to the ground model. It selects mutually compatible conditions while avoiding every ground-model obstruction.
Martin's axiom: A set-theoretic principle asserting that certain families of dense sets have a common filter below the continuum. Forcing constructions establish its consistency with ZFC and explore its consequences.
Kurt Gödel: The logician who proved that the constructible universe satisfies the generalized continuum hypothesis. His inner-model result supplied the consistency direction that Cohen’s forcing complemented.
Partial order: A relation that is reflexive, antisymmetric, and transitive, allowing some pairs of elements to remain incomparable. Forcing conditions are ordered by strength, with stronger conditions carrying more information.
Boolean-valued semantics: An interpretation of logic in which propositions receive values in a Boolean algebra rather than only true or false. It recasts forcing’s truth evaluation as semantics over algebraic values.
