Forearc basin

A sedimentary basin between a subduction trench and its volcanic arc. It accumulates sediment on the overriding plate within a convergent margin.

Subduction zone: A convergent plate boundary where one tectonic plate descends beneath another. The basin occupies the overriding plate above a subducting slab.
Tectonic subsidence: The gradual lowering of Earth's crust caused by tectonic processes. Subsidence creates accommodation space for sediment within the basin.
Nankai Trough: A subduction zone off southwest Japan where the Philippine Sea Plate descends beneath the Eurasian margin. Its margin includes sedimentary basins formed within the forearc region.
Sequence stratigraphy: The study of sedimentary strata as packages shaped by changes in accommodation and sediment supply. It helps interpret cycles of deposition and erosion in basin fill.
Foreland basin: A sedimentary basin that forms beside a mountain belt as the crust bends under tectonic loading. It develops beside an orogen, rather than between a trench and volcanic arc.
Volcanic arc: A chain of volcanoes formed above a subducting plate, commonly parallel to a trench. The arc marks the landward side of the forearc basin.
Sediment accommodation: The space available for sediment to accumulate, controlled by subsidence and changes in water or land level. Its balance with sediment supply governs how the basin fills.
Great Valley Sequence: A thick succession of Cretaceous marine sedimentary rocks in California's Great Valley. It preserves sediment deposited in an ancient forearc basin above the Franciscan subduction system.
Paleogeography: The reconstruction of the geographic arrangement of Earth's land and sea in the past. Forearc strata help locate former trenches, arcs, and coastlines.
Back-arc basin: A basin that forms behind a volcanic arc, commonly through extension of the overriding plate. Its position behind the arc distinguishes it from a trench-side forearc basin.
