Formal wear

Formal wear is clothing prescribed or conventionally chosen for ceremonies, state events, and evening functions. Its forms vary by culture, occasion, and time of day.

White tie: The most formal Western evening dress code, traditionally requiring a tailcoat for men and a full-length gown for women. It sets the strictest conventional standard for evening formal wear.
Tuxedo: A formal evening suit distinguished by lapels faced with satin or another lustrous fabric. It is the defining garment of black-tie dress in the United States.
Court of Louis XIV: The royal court centered at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV of France. Its rituals and fashion helped establish court clothing as a marker of status.
Casual wear: Clothing chosen for comfort and everyday use rather than prescribed ceremonial or professional formality. It occupies the opposite end of the formality spectrum.
Black tie: An evening dress code centered on a dinner jacket or tuxedo, with corresponding formal attire for other guests. It defines a widely used level of evening formality below white tie.
Tailcoat: A formal coat with a short front and long split tails at the back. It is central to white-tie attire and traditional morning dress.
Beau Brummell: An English social arbiter who promoted restrained, precisely tailored men's dress in the early nineteenth century. His ideals helped shift elite menswear from ornate court dress toward the modern suit.
Semi-formal attire: Clothing for occasions requiring more polish than casual dress but less than formal dress codes. It is frequently mistaken for formal wear despite its lower level of formality.
Morning dress: A traditional daytime formal dress code featuring a tailcoat with cutaway fronts. It shows how formal wear changes with the time of day.
Evening gown: A long formal dress designed for evening occasions. It is a common counterpart to men's evening formalwear.
