Formation of Saudi Arabia

The formation of Saudi Arabia was the political and military unification of much of the Arabian Peninsula under Ibn Saud, culminating in the kingdom’s proclamation in 1932.

First Saudi State: An emirate centered on Diriyah that allied the House of Saud with the religious reform movement of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. It established the Saudi-Wahhabi alliance that shaped later efforts to rule central Arabia.
Rashidi Emirate: A rival dynasty’s state centered in Ha'il that controlled much of northern Arabia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Rashidis were Ibn Saud’s principal rivals for control of central Arabia.
Ibn Saud: The founder and first king of Saudi Arabia, who ruled from 1932 until his death in 1953. His leadership united territories that became the kingdom.
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A sovereign state on the Arabian Peninsula, proclaimed by Ibn Saud on 23 September 1932. It was the state formally established by the unification process.
Second Saudi State: The Saudi emirate based in Riyadh from 1824 to 1891, ruled by successive members of the House of Saud. Its collapse left the family in exile before Ibn Saud’s campaign to recover Riyadh.
Ikhwan: A tribal military-religious movement formed under Ibn Saud, whose members settled in agricultural colonies and fought in his campaigns. The Ikhwan supplied formidable forces for expansion across the peninsula.
Hussein bin Ali, King of Hejaz: The Hashemite ruler of Hejaz from 1916 to 1924 and leader of the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule. His kingdom was the principal western rival Ibn Saud defeated.
Treaty of Jeddah (1927): An agreement in which Britain recognized Ibn Saud’s independence and sovereignty over his territories. It secured international recognition before the kingdom was proclaimed.
House of Saud: The ruling dynasty of Saudi Arabia, descended from Muhammad bin Saud, the eighteenth-century emir of Diriyah. Ibn Saud’s dynastic claim anchored the state he built.
Battle of Rawdat Muhanna: A 1906 battle in which Ibn Saud’s forces defeated the Rashidi emirate’s army near Unaizah. The victory weakened the Rashidis and helped secure Ibn Saud’s control of Najd.
