Formic acid

Formic acid (HCOOH) is the simplest carboxylic acid, consisting of one carbon atom bonded to a hydroxyl group and an oxygen atom. It occurs in some insect venoms and is used in chemical synthesis and preservation.

Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, in which a carbonyl and hydroxyl group share a carbon atom. Formic acid is the simplest member of this functional-group family.
Leather tanning: The treatment of animal hides to produce durable leather. Formic acid helps adjust acidity during pickling and tanning operations.
Ant venom: A defensive secretion produced by ants, sometimes containing formic acid. The acid’s name reflects its isolation from ants, and some species spray it defensively.
Acetic acid: The two-carbon carboxylic acid CH₃COOH, familiar as the principal acid in vinegar. Adding one carbon changes formic acid’s reactivity and makes acetic acid less acidic.
Acid dissociation constant: A quantitative measure of how readily an acid donates a proton in solution. Its value describes formic acid’s strength relative to other weak acids.
Silage: Fermented, moist fodder preserved for livestock, usually from chopped crops. Formic acid can suppress undesirable fermentation during silage production.
Bee venom: A biologically active secretion injected by bees through a sting. Formic acid occurs in some bee venoms, though it is not their principal toxin.
Methanol: The simplest alcohol, with the formula CH₃OH. Methanol has one carbon like formic acid but lacks its carboxyl group and acidity.
Formate: The anion HCOO⁻, formed when formic acid loses a proton. This conjugate base forms when formic acid ionizes in water.
Rubber coagulation: The aggregation of latex particles into solid rubber. Formic acid is used to coagulate natural rubber latex.
