Formula racing

Formula racing is single-seat automobile racing in which competing cars must meet technical regulations defined by a specific racing formula. Its rules distinguish each series and shape car design, performance, and competition.

Open-wheel car: A racing car whose wheels sit outside the bodywork rather than beneath enclosed fenders. Most formula-racing cars use exposed wheels, making this a defining vehicle layout.
Motorsport: Competitive events in which motorized vehicles race or test performance against one another. Formula racing is one branch of the wider world of competitive motor sport.
Formula One: The FIA-sanctioned international championship for the highest class of single-seat circuit racing. It is the most prominent global championship built around a distinct racing formula.
Sports car racing: Automobile racing commonly featuring closed-cockpit cars built for endurance or sprint competition. Its cars usually have enclosed bodywork and may carry multiple drivers, unlike formula cars.
Downforce: Aerodynamic force that presses a vehicle toward the road as air flows around it. Formula-car wings and floors generate grip that lets cars corner at high speed.
Racing formula: A rule set defining the eligible vehicles and competition requirements for a racing category. The formula is the rule framework that gives this form of racing its name.
Formula Two: An FIA championship positioned below Formula One, using standardized cars and supporting many Grand Prix weekends. It combines a defined formula with a role as a development series for drivers.
Touring car racing: Circuit racing using production-based cars modified for competition. Touring cars retain road-car body shapes rather than formula racing's purpose-built single-seaters.
Ground effect: Aerodynamic lift or downforce produced by airflow shaped between a vehicle and the surface beneath it. Underbody airflow can create substantial downforce while influencing car design and following behavior.
Single-seater racing: Automobile racing in cars designed with one seat for the driver. A single driver cockpit is the defining seating arrangement of formula racing.
