Forth Bridge

The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge spanning Scotland’s Firth of Forth. Opened in 1890, it is a landmark of Victorian engineering.

Cantilever bridge: A bridge supported by cantilevers, projecting structural arms anchored at one or both ends. The Forth Bridge’s signature spans use paired cantilevers to carry the railway across the estuary.
Thomas Bouch: A British railway engineer whose Tay Bridge collapsed in 1879. Bouch’s proposed Forth crossing was abandoned after the Tay Bridge disaster.
Sir John Fowler: A British civil engineer whose railway projects included the Forth Bridge, co-designed with Benjamin Baker. Fowler was one of the two principal engineers responsible for the bridge’s design.
