Foundations of Geometry

Foundations of geometry studies the axioms, definitions, and logical structures from which geometric theories are built. It examines how assumptions about space determine the theorems that follow.

Axiom: A statement accepted as a starting assumption within a formal theory. Geometric foundations begin by specifying which statements about space are assumed.
Euclidean geometry: Geometry governed by Euclid's postulates, including the parallel postulate in its familiar form. It provides the canonical example of a geometry organized around explicit postulates.
Euclid's Elements: An ancient Greek mathematical treatise that organized geometry and number theory through definitions, postulates, and proofs. Its axiomatic presentation shaped the foundational ideal that later mathematicians examined.
Hyperbolic geometry: A non-Euclidean geometry in which multiple lines through a point can be parallel to a given line. It satisfies alternatives to Euclid's parallel postulate while retaining many other geometric axioms.
Consistency proof: A proof that a formal theory cannot derive a contradiction, often relative to another theory. Consistency proofs assess whether a geometric axiom system is logically safe under stated assumptions.
Definition: A precise stipulation assigning meaning to a term within a theory. Definitions clarify geometric objects without adding independent assumptions about them.
Hilbert's axioms: A rigorous axiom system for Euclidean geometry formulated by David Hilbert in 1899. Hilbert made implicit assumptions in classical geometry explicit and systematically organized.
David Hilbert: A German mathematician whose work shaped modern axiomatic geometry, mathematical logic, and other fields. His 1899 geometry axioms set a landmark standard for rigor.
Elliptic geometry: A non-Euclidean geometry in which no pair of lines is parallel. It demonstrates a distinct consistent response to the parallel postulate.
Relative consistency: A result showing that one theory is consistent if another theory is consistent. Models of Euclidean geometry can establish consistency relative to other mathematical systems.
