Metal casting : A manufacturing process in which molten material solidifies in a shaped mold. Foundry production is a form of casting, from mold preparation through solidification.
Cast iron : A group of iron-carbon alloys containing enough carbon to be cast readily. Its fluidity and range of properties make cast iron a major foundry metal.
Automotive industry : The industry that designs, manufactures, and sells motor vehicles and their components. Foundries supply engine, transmission, brake, and structural components to vehicle makers.
Foundry emissions : Air pollutants released by foundry operations such as melting, mold making, and pouring. Furnaces and sand systems can release particulates, gases, and hazardous substances.
Pattern (casting) : A model used to form the cavity into which molten metal is poured. The pattern determines the shape and dimensions of the casting mold.
Steelmaking : The industrial production of steel from iron or scrap by refining its composition. Unlike a foundry, a steelmaking plant primarily produces bulk metal rather than shaped castings.
Shipbuilding : The design and construction of ships and other large vessels. Marine engines, fittings, and propellers can include parts made by casting.
Industrial noise : Unwanted sound produced by industrial equipment and processes. Furnaces, shakeout, grinding, and material handling can expose foundry workers to loud noise.
Sand casting : A casting process that uses compacted sand to form a mold around a pattern. It is a widely used foundry method for making metal parts in varied sizes.
Refractory material : A material that withstands high temperatures without losing its essential properties. Furnace linings and some molds rely on refractories to contain molten metal.
