Four Books and Five Classics

The Four Books and Five Classics are a traditional Chinese canon of Confucian texts that shaped education, scholarship, and civil-service examinations.

Analects: A collection of sayings and dialogues attributed to Confucius and his disciples. It became the most widely studied record of Confucius’s teachings within the Four Books.
Confucius: A Chinese teacher and thinker whose teachings became foundational to Confucian traditions. Later tradition linked him to the transmission and interpretation of several canonical works.
Civil service of imperial China: The bureaucracy through which officials administered imperial Chinese governments. Canonical learning supplied credentials and shared intellectual language for officials.

Dong Zhongshu: A Han dynasty scholar associated with the political consolidation of Confucian learning. His influence helped strengthen the classics’ standing in imperial governance.
