Four Books

The Four Books are the Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, and Mencius, a group of texts made central to Confucian learning in imperial China.

Great Learning: A Confucian text linking self-cultivation to family order, governance, and peace under heaven. It became the curriculum’s opening text and traces a path from personal cultivation to public order.
Zhu Xi: A Song dynasty Confucian scholar who systematized Neo-Confucian thought and promoted the Four Books curriculum. His commentary and ordering established the curriculum’s influential form.
Chinese imperial examination system: The system of examinations through which imperial China selected many government officials. Its curricula and essay standards gave the canon practical stakes for aspiring officials.
Five Classics: Five ancient Chinese texts treated as foundational classics in Confucian scholarship and education. They formed the older canonical collection alongside which the Four Books gained prominence.
Doctrine of the Mean: A Confucian text on harmony, moral balance, and the constant practice of virtue. It supplies the curriculum’s account of ethical balance and cultivated sincerity.
Neo-Confucianism: A revival and transformation of Confucian philosophy that developed in China from the Song dynasty onward. Zhu Xi’s canon became a central vehicle for this broader intellectual movement.
Confucian education: Educational traditions centered on Confucian texts, moral cultivation, and preparation for public service. The Four Books became a defining core of this educational tradition.
Twelve Classics: A later expanded grouping of canonical Confucian texts used in Chinese scholarship and education. This larger canon shows that the Four Books were a selected curriculum, not the whole classical corpus.
Analects: A collection of sayings and conversations attributed to Confucius and his followers. Its dialogues preserve the teaching and conduct that the curriculum placed at its center.
Civil service examination: A system of state examinations used in imperial China to select officials through mastery of classical learning. Examination requirements carried the Four Books curriculum into education and official careers.
