Fourier transform

A mathematical operation that represents a function as a continuous superposition of sinusoidal components. It reveals the amplitudes and phases associated with different frequencies.

Fourier transform pair: The forward and inverse Fourier transform formulas relate a function to its frequency-domain representation. Together, these formulas specify how the transform analyzes a function and reconstructs it.
Complex exponential: A function of a complex variable defined by the exponential function, often expressed through sine and cosine. Complex exponentials compactly encode the oscillations used as Fourier components.
Signal processing: The analysis and manipulation of signals to extract information or produce desired outputs. Fourier transforms provide core tools for analyzing signal frequencies and designing filters.
Discrete Fourier transform: A finite transform mapping a sequence of samples to a finite set of frequency coefficients. It is the computational counterpart used when data are available as finite samples.
Joseph Fourier: A French mathematician and physicist who developed Fourier methods for studying heat conduction. His heat theory made decompositions into sinusoidal modes central to the transform’s history.
Fourier inversion theorem: A theorem stating conditions under which a function can be recovered from its Fourier transform. It explains when the frequency representation preserves enough information for exact reconstruction.
Sine wave: A periodic oscillation described by a sine or cosine function with specified amplitude, frequency, and phase. Sinusoids are the elementary oscillations whose contributions the transform measures.
Frequency-domain analysis: The study of systems and signals in terms of their responses across frequency. The transform converts time- or space-based descriptions into this frequency-focused view.
Fast Fourier transform: A family of algorithms that computes the discrete Fourier transform efficiently. It accelerates practical calculations but is an algorithm, not a different transform.
The Analytical Theory of Heat: Joseph Fourier’s 1822 treatise presenting mathematical methods for analyzing heat flow. The book set out the series-based ideas that led toward Fourier integral methods.
