Fourteen Points

The Fourteen Points were a peace program proposed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in January 1918, setting out principles for ending World War I and organizing the postwar settlement.

Woodrow Wilson: The 28th president of the United States, who led the country during World War I and proposed the Fourteen Points. Wilson presented the program to Congress on January 8, 1918.
League of Nations: An international organization established in 1920 to promote cooperation and prevent conflict after World War I. The Fourteenth Point proposed a general association of nations to guarantee political independence and territorial integrity.
Zimmermann Telegram: A 1917 German diplomatic message proposing a military alliance with Mexico against the United States. Its publication helped shift U.S. opinion toward entering the war before Wilson proposed his peace program.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. The treaty incorporated some Wilsonian principles but departed from others, especially on reparations and German responsibility.
Carthage peace: A punitive peace imposed on a defeated enemy, named after Rome’s destruction and subjugation of Carthage. Wilson presented his program as an alternative to a peace designed to humiliate or permanently weaken a defeated power.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, primarily between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. The program set out terms for ending this war and addressing its causes.
Freedom of the seas: The principle that neutral and commercial shipping should have access to international waters in peace and war, subject to agreed exceptions. The second point proposed freedom of navigation beyond territorial waters.
Russian Revolution: The 1917 revolutions that ended the Russian monarchy and brought the Bolsheviks to power. Russia’s withdrawal from the war and publication of secret treaties intensified debate over peace terms.
Paris Peace Conference: The 1919 conference at which the victorious Allied powers negotiated the postwar peace settlements. Wilson presented the points as a framework, but other leaders pressed their own security and territorial demands.
Clemenceau’s war aims: French prime minister Georges Clemenceau’s goals of securing France against Germany and obtaining compensation for wartime destruction. Clemenceau prioritized French security and reparations where Wilson favored broader principles and limits.
