Fovea (retina)

The central pit of the retina contains the highest density of cone photoreceptors and supports the sharpest, most detailed vision.

Cone cell: A retinal photoreceptor that supports daylight vision and color discrimination. Cones are densely packed in the fovea and provide its detailed, color-rich vision.
Retina: The light-sensitive neural tissue lining the back of the eye. The fovea is a specialized region within this tissue.
Age-related macular degeneration: A progressive disease that damages the macula and impairs central vision. Advanced disease can damage the fovea and compromise detailed central sight.
Foveal development: The formation and maturation of the foveal structure during retinal development. Its developmental sequence explains how the specialized central pit emerges.
Foveal avascular zone: The capillary-free region at the center of the retina. Keeping blood vessels away from the center reduces obstructions along the fovea’s optical path.

Midget retinal ganglion cell: A retinal output neuron with a small receptive field, common in the central retina. Small receptive fields help preserve the fine spatial detail gathered by foveal cones.
Photoreceptor: A sensory cell that converts light into electrical signals in the nervous system. The fovea’s defining cells belong to this broader class.
