France Prešeren

France Prešeren (1800–1849) was a Slovenian Romantic poet whose writing helped establish Slovenian as a literary language. His poem “Zdravljica” supplied the words for Slovenia’s national anthem.

Slovenian language: A South Slavic language spoken chiefly in Slovenia and written in the Latin alphabet. Prešeren expanded its literary range when it had limited standing as a written language.
Sonnet: A fourteen-line poetic form with established patterns of rhyme and meter. Prešeren used the form to demonstrate Slovenian’s capacity for intricate literary composition.
