Frances Willard

Frances Willard (1839–1898) was an American temperance reformer and educator who led the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union from 1879 until her death.

Woman’s Christian Temperance Union: A women-led organization founded in 1874 to oppose alcohol and promote social reform. Willard became its president in 1879 and built it into a national movement.
Home Protection: A temperance argument that women needed political power to protect families from alcohol-related harm. Willard used this rationale to connect women’s suffrage with the WCTU’s temperance mission.
Church of the United Brethren in Christ: A Protestant denomination founded in Pennsylvania in 1800. Willard grew up in this denomination, whose religious culture shaped her public moral language.
