Francesco Morosini

Francesco Morosini (1619–1694) was a Venetian admiral and statesman who led the Republic of Venice during its later wars with the Ottoman Empire and served as doge from 1688 until his death.

Morean War: A war between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, fought mainly in Greece from 1684 to 1699. Morosini commanded Venice’s principal campaigns in this conflict.
Doge of Venice: The elected chief magistrate and head of state of the Republic of Venice. Morosini held the office during the final six years of his life.
Parthenon: An ancient Greek temple on the Acropolis of Athens, dedicated to the goddess Athena. A Venetian mortar strike during Morosini’s siege detonated Ottoman munitions stored inside it.
Fall of Famagusta: The Ottoman capture of Famagusta in Cyprus in 1571 after a prolonged siege. Its loss contrasts with Morosini’s later success in defending Candia against Ottoman siege.
Siege of Athens (1687): A Venetian siege that captured Ottoman-held Athens during the Morean War. Morosini’s bombardment of the Acropolis damaged the Parthenon while forcing the Ottoman garrison to withdraw.
Republic of Venice: A maritime republic centered on Venice that governed territories around the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. Morosini served this state as commander and doge.

Ottoman–Venetian Wars: A series of conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. These wars defined Morosini’s military career and political standing.
