Francis Beaufort

Francis Beaufort (1774–1857) was a British naval officer and hydrographer who devised the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind force from observed conditions at sea.

Robert FitzRoy: A British naval officer, hydrographer, and meteorologist who commanded HMS Beagle and led the Meteorological Office. As a successor at the Admiralty, FitzRoy expanded the use of standardized weather observations.
Beaufort scale: A scale that classifies wind force from observed effects on the sea, land, or instruments. Beaufort devised this system to make wind descriptions consistent among naval observers.
