Francis I of France

Francis I ruled France from 1515 to 1547. His reign was marked by conflict with Charles V and royal patronage of Renaissance art, architecture, and learning.

Charles V: Charles V was Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of a vast Habsburg empire from 1519 to 1556. Their rivalry over Italy and European dominance shaped much of Francis’s foreign policy.
Château de Chambord: A French Renaissance château begun in 1519 as a royal residence for Francis I. Its scale and design express the courtly ambition of Francis’s building program.
Louis XII of France: King of France from 1498 to 1515, preceding Francis I on the throne. Louis’s death without a surviving son brought his cousin and son-in-law Francis to the crown.
Treaty of Cambrai (1529): A 1529 agreement between France and the Habsburgs that ended the War of the League of Cognac. Francis accepted costly terms that confirmed the limits of his Italian ambitions.
Italian Wars: The Italian Wars were a series of conflicts from 1494 to 1559 over control of the Italian peninsula. Francis’s campaigns in Italy made the wars central to his reign.
Leonardo da Vinci: An Italian artist, engineer, and natural philosopher of the Renaissance. Francis invited Leonardo to France and supported his final years at the royal court.
Louise of Savoy: A French noblewoman who served as regent during her son Francis I’s absences. Her political influence helped prepare Francis for kingship and sustained government during his campaigns.
Edict of Fontainebleau (1540): A French royal decree that intensified persecution of Protestant groups in 1540. Francis’s religious policy hardened against reform movements during the later years of his reign.
Battle of Pavia: The 1525 battle in which imperial forces defeated and captured Francis I. His capture exposed the military cost of contesting Habsburg power in Italy.
Rosso Fiorentino: An Italian Mannerist painter who worked at the French court from 1530. His work helped shape the decoration of Francis’s royal palace at Fontainebleau.
