Francisco de Almeida

Francisco de Almeida (c. 1450–1510) was a Portuguese nobleman and military commander who served as the first viceroy of Portuguese India from 1505 to 1509.

Battle of Diu: A 1509 naval battle in which a Portuguese fleet defeated a coalition led by the Gujarat Sultanate and Mamluk Egypt. Almeida’s son died in an earlier Indian Ocean battle; Almeida’s victory at Diu secured revenge and Portuguese naval dominance.
Cochin: A port city on India’s Malabar Coast, now part of Kochi, Kerala. Almeida made Cochin the headquarters of his administration and a base for Portuguese operations.
Afonso de Albuquerque: A Portuguese nobleman and commander who succeeded Almeida as governor of Portuguese India in 1509. Their rivalry reflected contrasting priorities: Almeida favored naval control, while Albuquerque pursued territorial conquest.
