Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker whose work ranged from royal portraits and tapestry designs to satirical prints and stark images of war and suffering.

The Third of May 1808: Goya’s 1814 painting of French troops executing Spanish civilians during the Peninsular War. Its anonymous victims and stark lighting make occupation violence a subject rather than a heroic battle.
Aquatint: A printmaking process that uses powdered resin to create tonal areas resembling washes or gradients. Its broad tonal range gave Los Caprichos and The Disasters of War their shadowed atmosphere.
