Franco-Dutch War

A European conflict fought from 1672 to 1678, in which France and its allies fought the Dutch Republic and its allies. It ended with the Treaties of Nijmegen.

Rampjaar: The Dutch name for 1672, when the Republic faced invasion by France, England, Münster, and Cologne. The invasion crisis that opened the war and threatened the Dutch Republic’s survival.
Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, whose reign expanded royal authority and French power in Europe. His government made the Dutch Republic the target of a major campaign in 1672.
