Franco-Prussian War

The 1870–1871 war in which Prussia and its German allies defeated the Second French Empire, leading to German unification and the establishment of the French Third Republic.

Ems Dispatch: An edited account of a meeting between Wilhelm I and the French ambassador, published by Otto von Bismarck in July 1870. Its provocative wording helped turn the diplomatic crisis into France’s declaration of war.
Otto von Bismarck: The Prussian statesman who led the unification of Germany and served as its first chancellor. Bismarck used the diplomatic crisis to strengthen Prussia’s position and bring southern German states into the war.
German Empire: The unified German nation-state proclaimed in 1871 under the Prussian king, Wilhelm I. Its proclamation during the war fulfilled the unification project that Prussia’s victory enabled.

Siege of Paris: The Prussian-led encirclement of Paris from September 1870 to January 1871, ending with the city’s surrender. The siege deprived the French government of its capital and forced an armistice.
North German Confederation: A federal state led by Prussia from 1867 to 1871, comprising northern German states. Its military alliances and institutions provided the framework for Prussia’s wartime coalition.
