Franco-Turkish War

A conflict fought mainly in Cilicia between French forces and Turkish nationalists from 1918 to 1921. It ended with France’s withdrawal and the Ankara Agreement.

Occupation of Constantinople: The Allied military occupation of Istanbul from 1918 to 1923 after the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in World War I. Allied occupation formed the wider setting for France’s intervention in southern Anatolia.

Henri Gouraud: A French general and colonial administrator who served as high commissioner in the Levant after World War I. As France’s senior regional official, he oversaw policy during the occupation.
Hatay Province: A Turkish province on the Mediterranean coast, including the former Sanjak of Alexandretta. The Ankara Agreement left Alexandretta outside Turkey, making its later status a separate dispute.
Turkish National Movement: A political and military movement that resisted the partition of the Ottoman Empire and established the Republic of Turkey. Its campaign against foreign occupation supplied the nationalist forces fighting France.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that imposed terms on Germany after World War I. The wider postwar settlement left Ottoman territorial arrangements to separate Allied negotiations.
