François Arago

François Arago (1786–1853) was a French physicist, astronomer, and politician. His work included optical polarization, magnetism, and the effects of electric currents on iron.

Electromagnetism: The physical interaction of electric charges and currents with magnetic fields. Arago’s work on current-induced magnetism contributed to the emerging unity of electricity and magnetism.
Magnetic induction: The production of a magnetic field or electric current through changes in magnetic conditions. Arago’s rotating-disk experiments anticipated the induction effects later quantified by Faraday.
Augustin-Jean Fresnel: A French engineer and physicist who established the wave theory of light and developed its mathematics. Arago supported Fresnel’s optical research and collaborated with him on polarization and interference.
Polarimeter: An instrument that measures the orientation or rotation of polarized light. Arago’s studies of optical rotation and polarization helped establish measurements later used in polarimetry.
École Polytechnique: A French grande école founded in 1794 to educate engineers and scientists. Arago studied there before joining the Paris Observatory as an astronomer.
Arago’s rotations: Rotation of a nearby conducting disk induced by a moving magnet or magnetic needle. This effect, discovered by Arago in 1824, revealed magnetic influence in nonmagnetic conductors.
Eddy current: A circulating electric current induced inside a conductor by a changing magnetic field. Eddy currents explain why a moving magnet can drag a conducting disk into rotation.
André-Marie Ampère: A French physicist whose work established foundational laws of electrodynamics. Arago demonstrated Ampère’s discovery that an electric current can magnetize iron.
Chromatic polarization: Color patterns produced when polarized light interacts with birefringent materials or optical components. Arago discovered color effects in polarized light that became tools for studying optical properties.
French meridian arc survey: A geodetic campaign measuring a meridian arc to determine Earth’s dimensions. Arago joined the survey in Spain, where political upheaval interrupted his fieldwork.
