Frank Pantridge

Frank Pantridge (1916–2004) was a Northern Irish cardiologist who developed the first portable defibrillator, enabling emergency cardiac treatment outside hospitals.

Portable defibrillator: A movable device that delivers an electric shock to treat certain dangerous heart rhythms. Pantridge’s 1965 device brought defibrillation into an ambulance for the first time.
Defibrillation: The delivery of an electric current to stop certain abnormal heart rhythms and allow an effective rhythm to resume. It is the treatment that Pantridge adapted for use beyond hospital walls.
