Frank Wilczek

Frank Wilczek is an American theoretical physicist who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction.

David Gross: David Gross is an American theoretical physicist who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering asymptotic freedom. Gross and Wilczek jointly established asymptotic freedom in their 1973 paper.
Asymptotic freedom: Asymptotic freedom is the decrease of the strong interaction’s effective strength as quarks approach one another or collision energies rise. This is the phenomenon Wilczek, Gross, and Politzer discovered.
Quark model: The quark model classifies hadrons as combinations of more fundamental quarks. It introduced the constituents whose strong interactions Wilczek’s work addressed.

H. David Politzer: H. David Politzer is an American theoretical physicist who independently discovered asymptotic freedom in 1973. Politzer reached the same discovery independently and shared the Nobel Prize with Wilczek and Gross.
Quantum chromodynamics: Quantum chromodynamics is the quantum field theory describing quarks, gluons, and the strong interaction. Wilczek’s result showed that this theory could explain the strong force’s observed behavior.
Eightfold Way: The Eightfold Way is a classification scheme that organizes hadrons into patterns explained by approximate flavor symmetry. Its particle patterns helped motivate the quark model that preceded quantum chromodynamics.
Parton model: The parton model describes high-energy hadrons as collections of pointlike constituents that carry fractions of their momentum. Asymptotic freedom supplied the theoretical basis for treating constituents as nearly independent in hard collisions.
Strong CP problem: The strong CP problem is the unexplained absence of measurable CP violation in the strong interaction. Wilczek’s axion proposal offers a mechanism that could resolve this puzzle.
