Frantz Fanon

Frantz Fanon (1925–1961) was a Martinican-born psychiatrist and anticolonial writer whose work examined how colonial rule and racism shape identity, violence, and liberation.

Colonialism: A system of political and economic domination in which one power governs and exploits another territory and its people. Fanon analyzed colonial rule as a structure that organizes social life and produces racial hierarchy.
Black Skin, White Masks: Fanon’s 1952 book analyzing the psychological and social effects of anti-Black racism under colonialism. It develops his account of racialized identity through language, desire, and encounters between Black and white people.
Aimé Césaire: A Martinican poet and politician whose writing and politics helped shape the Negritude movement and anticolonial thought. Césaire was Fanon’s teacher in Martinique and a major influence on his early political imagination.
Nonviolent resistance: A strategy of political struggle that rejects physical violence while using protest, refusal, and civil disobedience. It contrasts with Fanon’s argument that colonial violence can make counterviolence part of decolonization.
Negritude: A literary and political movement that affirmed Black identity and culture in response to colonial racism. Fanon engaged with its recovery of Black identity while questioning its limits as a path to liberation.
The Wretched of the Earth: Fanon’s 1961 book on decolonization, anticolonial violence, national consciousness, and the postcolonial state. It presents his most sustained analysis of liberation struggles and the dangers facing newly independent nations.
Jean-Paul Sartre: A French philosopher and writer associated with existentialism and twentieth-century political engagement. Sartre’s preface to The Wretched of the Earth helped frame Fanon’s work for many European readers.
Mahatma Gandhi: An Indian anticolonial leader who made nonviolent civil resistance central to the struggle against British rule. Gandhi’s strategy offers a prominent alternative to Fanon’s analysis of revolutionary violence.
Psychoanalysis: A theory and clinical practice that investigates unconscious mental processes and their effects on thought and behavior. Fanon adapted psychiatric and psychoanalytic ideas to analyze the psychological effects of racism.
Algerian War: A war from 1954 to 1962 in which Algerian nationalists fought French colonial rule. Fanon supported Algerian independence and wrote about the war’s political and psychological stakes.
