Franz Boas

Franz Boas (1858–1942) was a German-American anthropologist who helped establish modern American anthropology and challenged racial determinism and unilinear cultural evolutionism.

Ruth Benedict: An American anthropologist who studied culture and personality and wrote Patterns of Culture. Benedict was Boas’s student and carried his comparative approach into influential studies of cultural patterns.
Historical particularism: An approach that explains each culture through its particular history rather than a universal evolutionary sequence. This approach captures Boas’s insistence that cultural traits be understood through specific historical processes.
