Franz Bopp

Franz Bopp (1791–1867) was a German philologist whose comparative study of Sanskrit and other Indo-European languages helped establish historical comparative linguistics.

Comparative linguistics: The study of language relationships through systematic comparison of linguistic features. Bopp’s work helped establish this field as a methodical study of language history.
