Franz Josef Land

Franz Josef Land is a Russian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, north of Novaya Zemlya, comprising nearly 200 islands. It is Russia’s northernmost land territory.

Prince Rudolf Island: An island at the northern end of Franz Josef Land, containing Cape Fligely, Russia’s northernmost point. Its Cape Fligely marks the archipelago’s northern limit and Russia’s northernmost point.
Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition: An 1872–1874 expedition led by Julius von Payer and Carl Weyprecht to explore the Arctic. Its crew discovered Franz Josef Land in 1873 while trapped in sea ice.
Arctic sea ice: Sea water frozen across the Arctic Ocean, varying seasonally and over longer climatic timescales. Its extent governs when ships can reach the archipelago and move between islands.
Russian Arctic National Park: A Russian protected area established in 2009, encompassing Franz Josef Land and parts of Novaya Zemlya. The park governs conservation and visitation across much of the archipelago.
Cape Fligely: A cape on Prince Rudolf Island, recognized as Russia’s northernmost point. This landmark gives the archipelago its farthest-north geographic distinction.
Julius von Payer: An Austro-Hungarian army officer, explorer, and artist who helped lead the 1872–1874 Arctic expedition. Payer named the archipelago for Emperor Franz Joseph I and mapped its first islands.
Arctic Ocean: The smallest and shallowest of Earth’s five oceans, centered on the North Pole. The archipelago lies within this ocean’s ice-covered waters.
Polar research station: A remote facility for scientific observations and research in polar regions. Stations on the islands have supported meteorological and other Arctic research.
Hooker Island: An island in Franz Josef Land named for the British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker. Its Tikhaya Bay became a major base for Arctic research and exploration.
Carl Weyprecht: An Austro-Hungarian naval officer and Arctic explorer who co-led the 1872–1874 expedition. His expedition helped establish the archipelago’s place in Arctic exploration history.
