Franz Joseph Gall

Franz Joseph Gall (1758–1828) was a German physician and anatomist who proposed that mental faculties are localized in brain regions and that skull shape reveals their development. His theory, later called phrenology, was rejected, while his emphasis on cerebral localization influenced neuroscience.

Phrenology: A nineteenth-century theory that inferred mental traits from the shape of the skull, supposedly reflecting underlying brain development. Gall’s system became known by this name after his death.
Cerebral localization: The principle that particular brain functions depend especially on particular brain regions. Gall argued that distinct mental faculties had distinct cerebral locations.
Marie Jean Pierre Flourens: A French physiologist whose animal experiments challenged claims that complex mental functions occupied sharply bounded brain areas. Flourens used ablation experiments to oppose Gall’s detailed map of cerebral faculties.
Functional specialization: The division of cognitive or behavioral functions among specialized components of a system. Gall’s claim that faculties had distinct brain sites anticipated this broader research question.
Equipotentiality: The hypothesis that different regions of a brain can contribute similarly to a function, especially after injury. This view contrasts with Gall’s claim that each mental faculty occupied its own specific region.
Cranioscopy: Gall’s method of assessing mental faculties by examining external features of the skull. This was Gall’s original name for the practice later called phrenology.
Cerebral cortex: The outer layer of the brain, involved in perception, movement, language, and higher cognition. Gall assigned many of his supposed faculties to regions of the cerebral surface.
Paul Broca: A French physician who linked damage to a left frontal brain region with impaired speech production. Broca’s later clinical evidence supported a limited form of functional localization, unlike Gall’s skull-based map.
Localization of brain function: The study of how specific brain regions contribute to particular functions. Modern localization research preserves a question Gall raised while relying on evidence phrenology lacked.
Holism in neuroscience: The view that brain functions arise from coordinated activity across broad or interconnected regions. Holistic accounts resist Gall’s sharply separated map of mental faculties.
