Franz Stangl

Franz Stangl was an Austrian SS officer who commanded the Sobibor and Treblinka extermination camps during the Holocaust. He was convicted of crimes connected to the murder of hundreds of thousands of people.

Christian Wirth: A senior SS officer who organized the killing centers of Operation Reinhard and supervised their commandants. Wirth recruited Stangl and oversaw the extermination-camp system in which he served.
Operation Reinhard: The Nazi operation that murdered nearly two million Jews in occupied Poland, principally at Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka. Stangl’s camps were central killing sites in this operation.
Sobibor trial: A 1965–1966 West German trial of former Sobibor personnel for their roles in mass murder. Stangl was not tried there, but the proceedings examined crimes at the camp he had commanded.
