Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was an American abolitionist, writer, and orator who escaped slavery and became a leading advocate for emancipation and civil rights.

Maryland slavery: A system of chattel slavery that persisted in Maryland until the state abolished it in 1864. Douglass was born enslaved in Maryland and later described its violence and restrictions.
Literacy and slavery: The contested ability to read and write among enslaved people, restricted by law and custom in many slaveholding communities. Douglass’s clandestine education became both a means of self-understanding and a theme in his writing.
