Frederick Soddy

Frederick Soddy was an English chemist whose work on radioactive elements helped establish the concept of isotopes. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Radioactivity: The spontaneous emission of particles or electromagnetic radiation from unstable atomic nuclei. Soddy studied radioactive substances and traced how they change into other elements.
Displacement law: The rule that alpha or beta decay changes an element’s position in the periodic table by a predictable amount. Soddy formulated the law describing how radioactive emissions transform one element into another.
Ernest Rutherford: A New Zealand-born physicist who pioneered research on radioactivity and the atomic nucleus. Rutherford collaborated with Soddy on radioactive decay and elemental transformation in Montreal.
