Free French Forces

The Free French Forces were French military units that continued fighting the Axis alongside the Allies after France’s 1940 defeat, under Charles de Gaulle’s leadership.

Charles de Gaulle: French army officer and statesman who led the Free French movement and later became president of France. His 18 June 1940 appeal called for continued resistance and anchored the movement’s leadership.
Armistice of 22 June 1940: The agreement that ended major fighting between France and Germany in 1940 and divided France into occupied and unoccupied zones. The armistice prompted de Gaulle to reject surrender and continue the war from abroad.
Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque: French general who commanded Free French forces in Africa and later led the 2nd Armored Division. His campaigns in Africa and France made him one of the movement’s most prominent commanders.
Battle of Kufra: A 1941 campaign in which Leclerc’s forces captured the Italian-held oasis of Kufra in Libya. The victory was an early Free French success in the North African desert.
Provisional Government of the French Republic: The French government led by de Gaulle that administered liberated France from 1944 until the Fourth Republic was established. The armed movement helped establish this government as France’s legitimate authority.
Free France: The political movement and wartime authority led by Charles de Gaulle in opposition to Vichy France. The Free French Forces were its military arm.
Appeal of 18 June: A radio address in which Charles de Gaulle urged French people to continue resisting Germany after France’s defeat. It became the founding call for the Free French movement.
Pierre Koenig: French general who commanded Free French forces at Bir Hakeim in 1942. His defense of Bir Hakeim became a defining episode in the forces’ wartime record.
Tunisian campaign: The Allied campaign that defeated Axis forces in Tunisia in 1942–1943. Free French units fought in North Africa as Allied forces cleared the Axis from the continent.
French Fourth Republic: The republican government of France that lasted from 1946 to 1958. The Free French legacy fed into the reconstruction of France’s postwar state and armed forces.
