Free love

Free love is a social ideal that favors intimate relationships chosen without coercion by law, economic dependence, or convention. It challenges the assumption that marriage or exclusive partnership should govern sexual and romantic life.

Owenism: A nineteenth-century social reform movement inspired by Robert Owen’s cooperative communities and critique of existing institutions. Owenite communities helped make freedom in marriage and domestic life part of broader social reform.
Consent: Voluntary, informed, and revocable agreement to participate in an activity. Free love depends on choice that is genuinely voluntary rather than imposed.
Mary Gove Nichols: An American physician, lecturer, and reform writer who advocated sexual education and reform of marriage. Her writing linked women’s bodily autonomy with freedom from restrictive marriage conventions.
Compulsory heterosexuality: The social assumption that heterosexuality is natural, universal, or required. Free love’s opposition to convention also raises questions about pressure to conform to heterosexual norms.
Coverture: A legal doctrine that historically subsumed a married woman’s legal identity under her husband’s in English law. It exemplifies the legal dependence that free-love advocates sought to dismantle.
Oneida Community: A nineteenth-century religious commune in New York that practiced complex marriage and communal child-rearing. Its radical relationship system became one of the best-known American experiments associated with free love.
Marriage: A socially or legally recognized union that establishes rights and responsibilities between partners. Free love questions marriage’s claim to regulate intimate relationships, not necessarily every couple’s choice to marry.
Victoria Woodhull: An American suffragist, political candidate, and publisher who publicly defended women’s sexual autonomy. Her 1871 speech on free love made the phrase a conspicuous political controversy.
Patriarchy: A social system in which men hold disproportionate power and authority. Formal freedom in relationships can coexist with gendered power that limits meaningful choice.
Marital rape: Nonconsensual sexual activity committed by a spouse against the other spouse. The recognition of marital rape rejects the idea that marriage grants permanent sexual consent.
