Freestyle swimming

A competitive swimming discipline in which any stroke is permitted, though front crawl is used almost universally because it is fastest.

Front crawl: A swimming stroke using alternating arm pulls and flutter kicks, usually performed face down. It is the stroke used in nearly all competitive freestyle races.
Swimming: Locomotion through water using coordinated body movements. Freestyle swimming is one competitive form of this broader activity.
50 metre freestyle: An individual sprint race covering 50 metres in freestyle. It is the shortest pool freestyle event in the Olympic program.
Medley swimming: A swimming format requiring competitors to use multiple prescribed strokes in sequence. Unlike freestyle, medley races restrict which stroke is used at each stage.
Flutter kick: An alternating up-and-down leg action used to propel and stabilize a swimmer. It supports body position and contributes propulsion during front crawl.
Competitive swimming: Organized racing in which swimmers compete under standardized rules and distances. Freestyle is one of its principal racing disciplines.
100 metre freestyle: An individual freestyle race covering 100 metres. It combines sprint speed with the need to manage effort across two pool lengths.
Backstroke: A competitive swimming stroke performed on the back with alternating arm movements. Its required body orientation distinguishes it from the usual front-crawl freestyle.
Bilateral breathing: A breathing pattern in which a swimmer inhales on alternating sides. Front-crawl swimmers use it to balance breathing and maintain a consistent stroke rhythm.
World Aquatics: The international governing body for aquatic sports, including swimming. Its rules define legal freestyle competition and recognized records.
