Freetown

Freetown is Sierra Leone’s capital and largest city, located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. Its history is closely tied to the resettlement of formerly enslaved people.

Nova Scotia Settlers: Black Loyalists who left Nova Scotia for Sierra Leone in 1792 to establish a settlement near present-day Freetown. Their arrival formed the core of the settlement that became Freetown.
Sierra Leone Harbour: A large natural harbour on Sierra Leone’s Atlantic coast, adjoining the Freetown Peninsula. Its sheltered waters made Freetown a major port.
Krio people: An ethnic group in Sierra Leone descended largely from formerly enslaved people resettled in Freetown. Krio communities and institutions have deeply shaped the city’s culture.
Sierra Leone Civil War: An armed conflict in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002 between the government and rebel forces. The war brought displacement and insecurity to Freetown, especially during the 1990s.
Bo: A city in southern Sierra Leone and one of the country’s largest urban centres. Bo is a major inland city, unlike Freetown’s coastal capital and port role.
Granville Town: An early settlement in Sierra Leone founded for formerly enslaved people under British abolitionist Granville Sharp. It was an unsuccessful predecessor to the settlement later established at Freetown.
Freetown Peninsula: A peninsula in western Sierra Leone that extends along the Atlantic coast and contains Freetown. The city’s steep terrain and coastal form follow the peninsula’s geography.
Krio language: An English-based creole language widely spoken in Sierra Leone and used as a lingua franca. It developed among Freetown’s diverse communities and remains widely used in the city.
Operation No Living Thing: A 1999 rebel offensive in which Revolutionary United Front forces attacked and occupied much of Freetown. The operation devastated the capital and caused extensive civilian suffering.
Kenema: A city in eastern Sierra Leone known as a regional commercial centre. Kenema’s inland location and regional economy differ from Freetown’s maritime orientation.
