Frei Otto

Frei Otto (1925–2015) was a German architect and structural engineer who pioneered lightweight tensile structures, using minimal material to span large spaces.

Tensile architecture: Architecture in which tensioned elements, such as cables or membranes, carry structural loads. Otto helped establish this approach as a major way to create lightweight, long-span buildings.
Munich Olympic Stadium: A stadium in Munich completed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, distinguished by its sweeping transparent roof. Its cable-net canopy is Otto’s best-known built demonstration of a lightweight roof spanning varied venues.
Soap-film models: Physical models that use stretched soap films to reveal minimal surfaces within defined boundaries. Otto used them to test membrane geometries before translating forms into architectural structures.
Günter Behnisch: A German architect known for democratic public buildings, including the design of the Munich Olympic Park. Behnisch led the architectural team that worked with Otto on the Olympic site.
Lightweight construction: Building design that minimizes structural mass while meeting requirements for strength, stability, and use. Otto made material economy and structural lightness central architectural design goals.
Form-finding: The process of discovering a structure’s shape through its physical behavior under forces and constraints. Otto used physical models to let forces reveal efficient structural forms.
German Pavilion at Expo 67: A temporary pavilion in Montreal designed by Frei Otto and built for the 1967 international exposition. Its suspended cable-net roof brought Otto’s experimental lightweight construction to an international audience.
Hanging-chain model: A model in which suspended chains settle into curves that reveal efficient forms for tension-dominated structures. Its inverted curves offered a practical route from gravity-shaped models to tensile roof forms.
Jörg Schlaich: A German civil engineer whose practice developed innovative long-span and lightweight structures. Schlaich collaborated on the engineering of the Munich Olympic roof with Otto and Behnisch.
Gridshell: A curved structure formed from a grid of slender elements that gains strength through its overall geometry. Otto’s Mannheim Multihalle helped demonstrate the architectural potential of timber gridshells.
