FRELIMO

FRELIMO is the Mozambican political movement that led the struggle for independence from Portugal and has governed Mozambique since independence in 1975.

Mozambican War of Independence: An armed conflict fought from 1964 to 1974 between Portuguese forces and Mozambican nationalists seeking independence. FRELIMO organized the insurgency that made this war the central route to independence.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use mobility, surprise, and local support against a stronger opponent. FRELIMO used guerrilla tactics to challenge Portugal’s military control across rural areas.
Mozambican Civil War: A conflict fought from 1977 to 1992 between the FRELIMO government and the insurgent movement RENAMO. FRELIMO’s one-party state and the regional Cold War setting formed part of the war’s political context.
Marxism–Leninism: A communist political doctrine emphasizing a revolutionary vanguard party and the establishment of a socialist state. FRELIMO adopted Marxism–Leninism as official doctrine in 1977.
Portuguese Mozambique: The Portuguese colonial territory in southeastern Africa that became independent Mozambique in 1975. FRELIMO’s campaign challenged the colonial state that ruled Mozambique before independence.
Lusaka Accord: The 1974 agreement between Portugal and FRELIMO that established terms for Mozambique’s transition to independence. The accord converted FRELIMO’s military and political gains into an agreed transfer of power.
RENAMO: A Mozambican political and former insurgent movement that fought FRELIMO’s government during the civil war. RENAMO became FRELIMO’s armed rival and later its principal electoral opposition.
Multiparty democracy in Mozambique: Mozambique’s political system of competitive elections and multiple legally recognized parties. The system replaced FRELIMO’s post-independence one-party rule after constitutional reforms.
Eduardo Mondlane: A Mozambican nationalist scholar who became FRELIMO’s first president in 1962. Mondlane helped unite nationalist groups and led FRELIMO during its formative years.
Samora Machel: A Mozambican revolutionary who led FRELIMO after Eduardo Mondlane’s death and became the country’s first president. Machel directed the movement through the final independence campaign and into government.
